I could not agree with you more about recommending Tamim Ansari's amazingly informative book "Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes". Though I feel I have to point out that as the title states, it is a history of Muslims and their dynasties and NOT of Islam ... It is about how they rose and how they fell (Destiny Disrupted) it is about their dynastic and sectarian infighting, and how they lost their enlightenment and how they failed to regain it despite many reformation and renewal movements over the last two centuries.
Another of Tamim Ansari's books " The Invention of Yesterday" is also as amazingly informative!
